I've been passionate about animals all my life having owned a variety of dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs since as early as I can remember.
I was always the one that friends, family and work colleagues turned to when they needed their dogs walked or their rabbit cared for whilst they were on holiday. I even seemed to become the unofficial guardian of Booster, Bleep and Millie, three beautiful working cats that lived at Beth Chatto Gardens on ratting duties in the years I worked there.
I'm now fortunate enough to be able to turn my passion for animals into a career.
I set out to build this dog walker business properly. In order to bolster my 'unofficial' experience, I volunteered at the National Animal Welfare Trust for nearly two years. This was a great opportunity and I learnt how to rehabilitate dogs through ‘Open Paw Program’ training, making sure they have enough walks during the day and to carry out routine care.
In addition, I also attended Writtle Agricultural College where I achieved a Level 4 qualification in Animal Management. This really rounded out my experience and gave me the chance to work with a huge variety of different species.
From reptiles and amphibians to the everyday animals like rabbits, cats and dogs, I've been hands-on with almost every kind of pet you can imagine.
In the case of the equestrian and livestock animals I dealt with, it was perhaps a little too hands-on (perhaps 'hands-in' is a better phrase, as I had to put arms up into places you don't want to imagine!)
On the business side of things, I also ensured I had the procedures, marketing, finance, etc. skills in place by attaining a certificate in ‘Starting a Pet Sitting and Dog Walking Business’ also obtained at Writtle Agricultural College. I'm very fortunate to have a network of business mentors who can guide me on all aspects of setting up, running and building my venture when needed.
The key part of my business' name is "Care". My aim when setting up Maddie's Companion Care was to truly help anyone who has pets but, for whatever reason, are too busy to give them their full attention.
I repeatedly hear that having a professional come pet sitter to your home to look after your animals and make sure that their overall health and basic needs are met gives clients the peace of mind that their pets are getting the quality of life they deserve.
I'm proud of the relationships I'm building with my clients and the genuine trust that they have to welcome me into their homes and care for their furry, feathery or scaly family members.
Word of mouth seems to be spreading quickly and a day doesn't go past without a call, email or message from someone who's been recommended to us. I look forward to the future and hope that it's you calling us soon!
